Generally, sensitive skin is thin with visible broken capillaries under the skin’s surface, it also has fine pores. When exposed to changes in temperature such as cold or heat, sensitive skin reddens easily. Sensitive skin also tends to rash easily when exposed to irritants or even skin care products. 

It’s best to try and limit the use of skin care products. Generally, simple skin care regimens are more effective since it prevents product overload. Sensitive skin care relies on strengthening the skin to reduce sensitivity and increase tolerance.

Hydrate your skin.

Sensitive skin is prone to dryness which can lead to increased sensitivity. Staying hydrated and applying a lightweight moisturiser each day can help restore your skin’s moisture barrier which is what acts as defence mechanism against allergens. 

Eat skin-friendly food.

Fruits, vegetables, and other water-rich foods are essential in correcting skin imbalances. The vitamin, mineral, and water content of these foods hydrate your skin and restore its health. Sweet clear of spicy food, alcohol and caffeine all of which can increase your skin’s sensitivity. 

Limit sun exposure.

Sun exposure can cause the skin to redden and burn easily. Before going out, apply sun protection all over. You usually need to do this around 20 minutes before you go out into the sun to ensure you’re fully protected.

Protect skin at all times.

Even when you are indoors, your skin still needs protection. If you are staying in an air-conditioned room or one with central heating, then apply a lightweight moisturiser frequently. This will prevent your skin from drying out due to the extreme temperatures.  

Avoid products with artificial colourants and synthetic fragrances.

Colourants and fragrances are added to skin care products only to make them smell nice, not because your skin benefits from the additions. Often, it’s these added extras that can cause a reaction and increase your skin’s sensitivity.
